What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually caused by the sun’s harmful rays. It is the most common cancer in the United States and is highly treatable if caught early.

What are the types of skin cancer?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It looks like a flesh-colored, pearl-like bump, or pinkish patch of skin.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer. It often looks like a red firm bump, scaly patch, or a sore that heals and reopens.

Melanoma, the most serious skin cancer because of its tendency to spread, is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Melanoma can develop within a mole that you already have on your skin or appear suddenly as a dark spot on the skin that looks different from the rest.  Know the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma: asymmetry, border, color, diameter, and evolving.
